Live Band Conditions and Propagation Resources
A curated set of external resources for solar and geomagnetic conditions. Indicators are context, not guarantees.
Planetary Kp index
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center publishes the planetary K-index, which characterises geomagnetic disturbance. High Kp can indicate disturbed conditions, but effects depend on path, time and frequency.
Combine indicators with listening
Use solar and geomagnetic data alongside actual band observations, online SDRs and member reports. No single number reliably predicts whether a particular 27 MHz path will open.
Log observations
Record UTC time, locations, stations heard and conditions. Over time, this helps distinguish repeated patterns from one-off openings.
Interpret cautiously
Forecasts and indices describe broader conditions. Local noise, antenna performance, receiver sensitivity and propagation geometry influence what an operator hears.
