Digital DX on 11 Metres
An overview of FT8, WSJT-CB and other digital tools, separating software capability from permission to transmit.
What digital modes do
Digital modes encode information into signals that software can decode. Some support short structured exchanges in weak-signal conditions; others support more free-form messaging.
WSJT-CB and FT8
WSJT-CB is a community software project adapted from WSJT-X for CB-style identifiers and 11-metre use. Review its current documentation, releases and limitations before installing.
Receive first
Install from the project’s official source, select the correct audio input, set the receiver to the documented mode and frequency, synchronise the computer clock, and observe decoded activity before considering any transmission.
Do not assume legal compatibility
A mode being available in software, or a frequency being listed by a community, does not mean transmission is authorised in every country. Confirm rules for equipment, frequency, bandwidth, emission and use.

Always check current rules for the country and radio service you are using. A community convention or software feature is not proof that a transmission is authorised.
This guide is educational and may need updating as regulations, software and community information change. Check linked primary sources before relying on technical or regulatory details.
