A friendly radio starter guide
Build confidence with the basics, use equipment responsibly, and learn from the community.
Know your radio
Read the manual for your exact model. Learn how to select the correct mode, channel or frequency, set power appropriately, and use any scan or lock functions.
Listen before calling
Check whether the channel is in use. Keep your first call concise, speak clearly, and leave a pause so others can join or respond.
Share the air
Keep transmissions relevant and reasonably brief. Avoid interrupting an ongoing contact, and follow any local net or event instructions.
Make a safe station
Secure antennas, keep them clear of power lines, protect cables from damage, and follow the radio and antenna manufacturer’s safety guidance.
UK Citizens’ Band information
Ofcom says CB use is licence-exempt only when equipment is operated in line with the applicable technical requirements. Check the current official guidance and equipment rules before transmitting; an online frequency list or club page is not a substitute for those requirements.
This page is a general learning resource, not legal advice. Rules may change; check Ofcom for the latest information.
